Urban Anthropology Group Tours

Anthropologists from Urban Anthropology Inc.(UrbAn) have been conducting studies on Milwaukee’s cultural groups for over a decade.  These studies have been used to develop documentaries, museums, and tours.  UrbAn has been conducting tours for over five years.

Ethnic Milwaukee Bus Tours

Bus tours are year-round.  Group tours of 15-29 can be reserved most weekends, and occasional weekday evenings.  Group tours of 30-55 can be reserved for most weekdays or weekends.  Most tours are wheelchair accessible.  Book these at least two weeks in advance.  Prices include full tour, meal (where offered), tips, and entrance fees to all sites.  The prices listed are for most adults.  The lower price is for seniors, children, or students.

Milwaukee’s South Side Cultures: Who was, who came, & who joined?  Ethnic groups: Learn about the Natives, Poles, and Mexicans that made the South Side their home.  Examples of stops and sights: Latino art exhibit at the United Community Center, lunch at an ethnic restaurant, Native Church of the Great Spirit, Old South Side Settlement Museum tour, Basilica of St. Josaphat.  Documentary: Milwaukee’s Old South Side (seen at lunch). Prices: $50/$45.  3-4 hours.

Milwaukee’s North Side Cultures: Who was, who came, & who joined?  Ethnic groups: Learn about the Germans, Irish, Jews, African Americans, and Hmong that made the North Side their home.  Examples of stops and sights: Halyard Park and Sherman Park neighborhoods, Bronzeville recreated, lunch at an ethnic restaurant, Hmong museum, German architecture.  Documentary: Sherman Park Neighborhood (seen at lunch). Prices: $50/$45.  3-4 hours.

Milwaukee’s Harbor Cultures: Who was, who came, & who joined?  Ethnic groups: Learn about the Natives, Kashubes, Irish, and Italians that made the harbor area their home.  Examples of stops and sights: Milwaukee’s lakefront, lighthouse museum tour (or alternative), lunch at an ethnic restaurant, Juneau Park, Bay View, Jones Island.  Documentary: The Kashubes of Jones Island (seen at lunch). Prices: $50/$45.  3-4 hours.

Lost Milwaukee: Once thriving communities in the city’s past.  Ethnic groups: Learn about the extinct communities of Milwaukee’s past: The Mound Builders, the Kashubes of Jones Island, the Third Ward Irish, Socialists, Bronzeville, and Little Italy.   Examples of stops and sights: Forest Home Cemetery (site of leveled mounds), the Third Ward (and remnants of the cultures that once thrived there), the German Socialist sites, Milwaukee County Historical Society (when available), streets of Lower Bronzeville. Lunch on own in Third Ward.  Prices: $40/$35.  3 hours.

Ethnic Milwaukee Boat Tours

Boat tours are seasonal.  Group tours of 35 to 150 can be reserved most weekends. The boats used will be the Iroquois or the Voyageur. Most tours are wheelchair accessible.  Book these at least two weeks in advance, and check for availability.  Prices include full tour, meal (where offered), and tips. Prices listed are for most adults.  The lower price is for seniors, children, or students.

The People Nobody Knew: The Kashubes of Jones Island. 
Yes, a fishing village once thrived on Jones Island.  Features: Lunch at an ethnic restaurant, boat trip around Jones Island.  Documentary: The Kashubes of Jones Island (seen at lunch). Prices: $42/$37.  2.5 hours.

The River Cultures.
Learn about the Natives, Irish, and Italians that once lived along the Milwaukee River.  Features: Lunch at an ethnic restaurant, boat trip on Milwaukee River.  Documentary: The Urban Indians (seen at lunch). Prices: $42/$37.  2.5 hours.

 

South Side Budget Tours

Urban Anthropology Inc. offers two tours in the Historic Lincoln Village neighborhood. The lower price is for seniors, children, or students.

The Old South Side Settlement Museum.
Tour rooms that replicate the earliest Poles and Mexicans that arrived in this neighborhood.  Hear their stories.  Groups of 8-25 can book this tour any Sunday through Friday, year-round.  Prices: $10/$8.  3/4 hour.

Walking Tour: The Cultures and Architecture of Lincoln Avenue. 
Learn about this historic area, its ethnic groups, artists, and architecture.  A tour of the Basilica of St. Josaphat is included. Groups of 8-50 can book this tour Monday through Saturday, mid May to mid October.  Prices: $10/$8.  1-1/4 hour.

A fee will be charged for anyone that fails to cancel a reservation at least 24 hours before the tour.  The fee will reflect any lost time in staff hours and restaurant and boat reservation fees.
